I walk at 8 km/hr over short - kilometer - distances.

That's startling; single-time marching pace is around 5 km/hr.

I was going to ask if you were very tall, but then I did a little math in my head and realized if you were tall enough for that to be a strolling pace, I'd have heard of you much earlier.

I'm short. I walk fast. Or I cannot do basic math in my head.

Do you feel capable of covering a marathon course in five hours and sixteen minutes?

I strongly doubt it.

From the speed of your thighs, I conclude you are not a rough beast whose hour has come round at last.

Your cats, however...

A friend of mine participated in the Nijmegen march (military category) a few years ago but I cannot remember what his team averaged.

Dang, that's fast -- about 5 mph? I think my comfortable stride is under 3.5 mph, and suspect if I tried to do 3.5 mph or more for a block, I'd cramp up. So apparently you walk about 50% faster than I do.

I think I've been a fairly constant 3 mph (call it 5 km/h) throughout my life, maybe a tad faster if I'm in a hurry. But I usually plan on twenty minutes per mile when such things are likely to matter.

data feed me data...

I'm pretty steady at 600 steps/5 minutes (as measured by fitbit) and going at 6 km/hour (as measured by runkeeper/iphone GPS) when going for a walk. I usually keep going at this rate for an hour, past that I get back pain and need to slow down.

And I walk faster then most people, so 8 km/hour is ... impressively fast.

Back in the eighties, when there were train strikes and I regularly walked into work, I timed myself and worked out the distance from an Ornance Survey map and calculated I'd averaged 4.3 mph (6.9 kph) over a 90 minute period.

Alas, a couple of years ago I thought I'd go back to my old address and try the walk again. About 3.6 mph now.

And, due to a combination of footsoreness and shortened stride, where I used to walk maybe 1/3 faster than most people, now I walk at about half to 2/3 normal speed. It's really astonishing how much difference that simple change, plus the attendant minor or medium discomforts, makes in one's habits, recreations, and free time...
