The neighbor's dog that usually bounds over to greet me very carefully avoiding making eye contact with me a couple of days ago because it was in the middle of socializing with another dog and clearly wanted to keep doing that.

You mean there are dogs in the world who actually like you? And not as in "appetizer" or "tasty thing to chew on"?

Was the other dog a cool dog? If so, it's likely it was growling, "Ugh, do you know that guy? He sure is acting like knows you." Cool dogs are kind of jerks - especially if they know you pal around with cats.
