I do like the part from the Wikipedia article that the only place where Tom Cruise (who screened the film) lost his shit was when the character admitted he was making up everything as he went along.

Ooo, strike a nerve there, Tommy?

I am looking forward to this movie.

From the trailer, it looks as though the movie starts well after the religion is founded, so we would not see the equivalent of the Dianetics era and thus no Campbell. Also, I am not sure of the not-Scientology in the movie even has a not-Dianetics phase.

To tie in with your “all roads lead to Norman Spinrad” jag of the moment. Spinrad’s “The Mind Game” is interesting on Dianetics and L Ron Hubbard.

The novelist-founder of the book’s Scientology-like cult knows his techniques are pure hokum, but when he chooses to undergo the auditing / conditioning himself, he finds it still works for him helping him further believe in his own religion. Which I thought was a nifty piece of irony, rather than just offering a stereotypical cardboard cut-out cult leader.
