So, eye strain a common side-effect of using these devices? I've cranked down the brightness; maybe that will help.

Yes, eyestrain and, for some people, headaches. That's why I use only the backlit versions with good OLED screens. That "digital paper" stuff isn't ready for prime time yet^*.

^* If I have to write "in my opinion" or the execrable IMHO or one of its variants to point out that my opinion is an opinion, well, tough.

I probably haven't read from my Playbook long enough to notice. However, as a data point, I've turned down the brightness in order to prolong battery life.
