but for the life of me I cannot remember anything about the plot of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

1: And because I was told it was a Jim Carrey movie that wasn't actively annoying.

Maybe you kept having your memories of the movie deleted and then watching it again, except it turns out that somebody had been watching your memories of the movie and using them to get friendly with the movie?

In the Stating the Obvious Department, I find Wikipedia very useful for this sort of reminder. Much better than IMDB.

Similarly, Stranger than Fiction is a Will Farrell movie that isn't actively annoying. I guess you would call it SF or fantasy.

I've heard Elf isn't bad.

I'm beginning to think that I never actually saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, though.

You probably should, then. One of my favourite movies.

Well, go ahead and watch it [again], then, and see if it looks familiar. It's pretty good.

Do you remember seeing Frodo Elijah Wood in it?

Stranger than Fiction is an odd but charming movie. Parts of it are totally predictable, but I liked it.

Had to chime in because I saw it yesterday.

There's a dialog exchange from the commercial for that movie that went:

Patient: "This isn't going to cause brain damage, is it?"
Doctor: "Well, technically this is brain damage."

And then the whole rest of the plot falls into my memory.

How oddly appropriate.

I thought
"but for the life of me I cannot remember anything about the plot of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

was self-referential humor.

I've found that I rather like Jim Carrey when he's playing dramatic roles. Even The Mask wasn't so bad, since the movie is about half-and-half straight versus mugging, and the mugging was in context. It was enough to let me know, though, that an entire movie spent that way would drive me round the bend, so I never have watched his comedic roles.

I honestly don't think that any other actor would have been able to convincingly play the lead in The Truman Show the way that he did. It required someone who could act "big" enough to convince you that he could carry an entire TV network for years that was all about watching him, and Jim Carrey was able to do that. I'm not sure any other actor could have done that as well as he did.

As for his comedic movies, I saw several of them during an extended illness where my only entertainment was cable to for months at a time, and some of those were actually watchable, if you put your brain in neutral. I found the ones that were watchable were the ones where there's an element of self-awareness to it, where there was a feel of, "I'm going to be acting like an absolute prat for your amusement for the next 90 minutes, as broadly and as over the top as possible, I invite you to join me." I found that I could actually enjoy those.

Were you supposed to remember the plot of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? I mean, here's a nice SFnal movie about people deliberately seeking partial amnesia to forget their pain, and...

...no I don't remember it either.

I found it a much better movie than I had expected, different in style, composition and tone than the (lazy, I admit) label "Jim Carrey rom-com" implied.

I never thought of it as a Jim Carrey movie. I thought of it as a Charles Kaufman/Spike Jonez movie. But I probably didn't see any of the marketing.

Having that done must have been very expensive, indeed.
