Sample selected from here. In retrospect, picking 2011 because it offered fewer titles probably was a bad idea, given that most of these are not out yet. I am going from online descriptions. Corrections etc happily accepted.

That said, it may be that there's a discernible pattern here.

Vaughn's Discord's Apple also had a male co-protagonist. Esslemont's previous novels also had female protagonists, but I can't be certain about Stonewielder.

Home Fires was so fucking annoying with its gender politics, even though I liked a lot of the book--it was a great thriller.

The key is to read Harrison's latest Stainless Steel Rat book right before it, so it looks better by comparison.

The people who employ you are probably not expecting that your evaluation will be path-dependent. That is, they hope you will give the same review to a book whether you have preceded it with a Stainless Steel Rat book or not.

There's a mechanism in place to deal with this sort of issue.

The mechanism that springs to mind is that they make you read SSR, then read a review book, then SSR again, then the next review book. Et cetera. Your continued success as a reviewer is partially because this regimen has not driven you into gibbering madness.

My reaction to the first few chapters of that book was that someone needed to establish the Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Award for authors who will never be allowed to write female characters again. Then I took it back to the library.

I would certainly expect Fuzzy Nation, as a reboot of the original, to have a male protagonist (and a male Fuzzy protagonist, if there is also one) but we'll have to see.

Weber's A Mighty Fortress, based on the previous ones, will have male regular-human protagonists, plus Merlin, who is a grrl robot currently trapped by choice in a guyz0rb0rg body, for the last few centuries, but they'll remind us every so often that he's REALLY a she even though he could use his robot powers to have whatever genitalia she wanted at any given moment.
