When soldiers travel through hostile territory and one of their number is hit by an arrow, the natural reaction of the solders is to cluster around, looking mystified at the dead guy and standing with their backs to the direction the arrow came from.

I wasn't actually all that surprised to see how Essex's tour of Ireland ended.
