I just realized some James P. Hogan story I was sent (probably before 2005, which is about when I started to really push about not wanting to be sent his stuff) is an example of what could look like the multiregional model, except in his case it was related to his belief in intelligent design: human or at least pretty close to human species popped up independently all over the galaxy. Happily I almost never toss out old reports so I can ID this as "Tree of Dreams" from Cosmic Tales II. Despite being late in his career, it wasn't the worst thing I read from him, resembling a very watered-down EFR.

(Why is it the attempts I've seen by more modern authors to emulate Eric Frank Russell don't seem to work?)

This use of a MRM-like model is in contrast to Hogan's first novel, in which the impossibility that identical species of human could evolve in lineages that parted ways millions of years ago plays a crucial role in the plot.
