A number of people have mentioned this bit of climate news. Two questions:

1: If Northern Canada was semi-tropical, what were the current tropics like?

2: Does the subsequent formation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current mean that the Earth would not become quite so warm from a similar event?

Hugh Thompson, Jr. dead at 62.

Thompson was the officer who with his two crewmen, Glen Andriotta and Laurence Colbern, intervened to end the murder of Vietnamese civilians by fellow American soldiers under the command of William Calley at Mai Lai.

So you have an FTL drive that can cruise at 50x the speed of light. This is pretty darn fast compared to a real rocket but not so fast compared to the scale of the galaxy. Where do you go and why there, in particular?

Assume that the range (in days) is as good as the range for a nuclear sub.
