Wasn't there some group who wanted the NW section of the province to split off and join Manitoba? Or did I imagine that?

As have I. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not yet, but I'm not inclined to throw it out just yet.

And the northern angle of Manitoba was claimed by Ontario.

It has been mentioned several times. There supposedly are definate advantages for both Manitoba and the section of Northern Ontario that includes Thunder Bay which I cannot remember atm.

I think the border with Ontario could be at Nipigon (very beautiful area).

Yep, I'm from NWO (although I don't live there now) and whenever separation comes up, joining Manitoba comes up as a fairly popular option. It's probably one of the best options if the area is going to separate.
