I showed the picture to Kevin, and he said "oh, it's the house phone." 😄 Then he said "does it still work? I doubt it."

I remember Kevin persuaded Earl to design a backdrop for an ancient Greek scene in FASS 1990, so he was still around then. Although I think he was on the verge of retirement.

I think there is still a hiss when I listen but there are no other house phones left that I know of.

So it's still connected to the wiring. It's probably costing a few pennies a year in electricity.

I seem to recall you having posted about this artefact at least once before. Don't do it too many times or you might summon Earl's ghost....
