I think there's an allusion to Starship Troopers near the end of the book, in the sense that there's a revelation about the main character of TLB analogous to the revelation late in ST about the nature of its main character.
It is shown that Dietz's squad gets five weeks of training before they're dropped in the shit. Later a new recruit mentions they got two weeks of training.
Dietz was recruited while things were going downhill, but hadn't reached desperation stages for the corporations. (Or at least, that was my impression). The last bits are really reminiscent of Volkssturm units. And are about as effective.
And of course the only reason things get so bad for the corporations is because the corporations make it so. They could have sat on their hands and been OK.
