Having married the brother, and taken June as a lover, I have to ask, does Lillian have a thing for people with 'unsightly skin disorders'? Does she get any kind of character arc?

She does! She married the brother to escape her terrible life in the big city. Unfortunately for her, the local foreman knows that she isn't the upper class lady she appears to be, and thinks blackmailing her is a good idea.

Your suggestion of Deep Ones on the west coast is an interesting one, and there are plenty of small towns along the coast where the locals could drift off into eccentric lifestyles without the big city folk noticing. But that would be a different story.
