Date: 2022-04-15 03:07 pm (UTC)What a strange and powerful book.
The psychological horror is incredibly effective (and affective), the everyday young adult stuff cringingly powerful.
And how brilliant, to take such a common knot of magical thinking of young adults --- that somehow _my_ failure at schoolwork, or work, or something, will cause harm to my family; that my faithless transgression or forbidden dalliance is why they are sick, harmed --- and make it real, literal, central to plot and themes. Fear, love as metaphor and as actual.
Brilliant novel. And translation. I will be ruminating on it for a while.
