James is asking a question in a particular style which is not straightforward. The beginnning of the question sets a scenario; the end of it changes the intent.

Unpacking the questions turns it into something like:

What science fiction and fantasy books do you remember fondly from long ago, but are actually horribly flawed when you examine them now that you have matured?

Another term you might encounter for this is "blessed by the suck fairy" (or the racist fairy, the sexist fairy, the misogyny fairy...)
