This might be just a tad too “horrible things happen to children” for my taste.

One the basis of the anime adaptation, which was probably 2-3 volumes of material, there's nothing worse coming soon than the being-raised-as-dinner part.

I saw the first 2-3 episodes and went NOPE! Not for me. Sorry, it's too much and I can't watch it.

After seeing the first few anime episodes, I was put in mind of Death Note in that it's a lurid premise leading to a battle of wits, but it's a little more of an open game, given that neither side is entirely close with their plans.

This reminds me a bit of the Poul Anderson story “Faith”, which was published in a collection honoring Tolkien. I wonder whether the authors have read it.

After reading your manga review and learning there is an anime, I watched it. I quite enjoyed it. I was worried the ending would disappoint, but it did not.
