I remember, around age 4 or 5, getting VERY ANGRY at my dad for doing it wrong (where wrong = peanut butter on one slice of bread, jam on top of peanut butter, other slice of bread on top of that).

Fold it over, Dad!

Some chefs vary the method: peanut butter on one slice of bread, jam on the same slice, fold the slice over to make a half-sandwich.

If two half-sandwiches are required, well, the ingredients are still there on the counter...

Why spoil a perfectly good jam sandwich with yucky peanut butter?

(Yes, I lived in the US long enough to know about PB&J. But before that I had a childhood where home-made jam was an everyday delight and peanut butter was something loathsome that I learned to refuse after the first couple of tries, and it would never have occurred to me to put the two together.)

Like Macaraoni & Cheese, Toasted Cheese Sandwich, and Strawberry Shortcake, there's only one one way to make a Proper PB&J sandwich, and I don't understand why close of 80% of the people with whom I've discussed these things don't agree with me on how they're to be done.

With a knife, spread a thin layer of peanut butter on one side each of two slices of bread. With a spoon, add a goodly dollop of jam ("jelly" is acceptable in the U.S., with grape being admirable) to one slice. Spread this with the knife. Lick knife clean. Place the two added-ingredients sides together and do with the sandiwch whatever is fated to be done with it. (Best eaten immediately, IMHO, but still perfectly fine for lunch four+ hours later if properly wrapped.)

Personally, I have a slight preference for peanutbutter, a little butter, and honey, (mixed in a small container in advance) but a good PB&J is fine about twice per year.

My "some other solution" would include "have someone who isn't put at risk of anaphylaxis do it". ;)

Complaint: Forgot the cats option.

Also my sandwich option wasn't there:
PB on both slices, jam on top of PB on one slice.
Occasionally PB on both slices jam on both slices.
Bananas in between when I have them.

Put the jam on top of the peanut butter. Then put both on the bread.

Okay, everybody's talking about how they eat or don't eat peanut butter. Mostly I put it in a bowl and eat it with a spoon, with or without added jam, honey, sweet macapuno, or sunflower seeds. Sometimes there's rice cakes, bread, or akmak involved. Or I might use a sliced apple or a banana to convey the smoosh.

But mostly it isn't taking the place of a sandwich, it's instead of ice cream or cake. Even without anything sweet added to it.

I very rarely put either jam or peanut butter on bread, and I *never* mix the two together. Generally, when I eat either jam or peanut butter, it is with a spoon and not admixed with anything.
