Or Bárðarbunga manages to get a lot of ash into the atmosphere.

(Which, given the kind of volcano Bárðarbunga is, isn't at all likely.)

You're a bit early; the solstice isn't until 23:03 UTC.

I liked the longening nights.

And yet not enough to move to someplace where you would get more of it in the course of the year.

Faced with two toddlers that I can't take to the park between day care pick-up and home, I can't wait until the days lengthen!

Oh yeah, and worsening eyesight makes more daylight a good thing.

Unfortunately Americans have decided, in contravention of all that is rational, that solstices and equinoxes mark the beginning and not the middle of seasons.

Winter weather starts in late November everywhere I've ever lived that has a winter.

Astronomical seasons are marked by the solstices and equinoxes. Meteorlogical/climatological seasons start about 3 weeks earlier, lining up with the month boundaries. This matches the average onset of the seasons fairly well in Britain.

Astronomical seasons don't don't make much sense either. Winter should be the quarter of the year with the shortest days, so +/- 46 days from the solstice. Meteorlogical seasons should start a week or two later due to the lag in weather.

In any event, Americans use the astronomical definition as the only definition for seasons. The news today is full of stories claiming this is officially the first day of winter.

Or be ignored where irrelevant (e.g. the tropics).

At this time of year I always think it's unfortunate that all the songs about how nice cold and snow can be are tagged as Christmas songs. December 26, we're all supposed to shut up and get to the vernal equinox in silence, any way we can.
