APRIL
A CLASH OF KINGS by George R.R. Martin
I missed this.
[Part of the Game of Thrones series. I believe some people get killed in this]
VIGILANT by James Alan Gardner
Another fine effort from Mr. Gardner. This time the protagonist is a young woman with a history of emotional problems who joins a planetary police force notable for a remarkable elan.
Recommended. Draws from an idea of John Brunner's, used in one of his few non-glum books.
COLONIZATION: SECOND CONTACT by Harry Turtledove (Alternate)
At a guess, the plot progresses from point a to point a.000000001, with a cast of millions.
STARFARERS by Poul Anderson (Alternate)
This is a reworking of the Kith stories, with a new handwave for the NAFAL starships and a novel's length of new material about a long range exploration ship.
It has many of the quirks of late Anderson and is not entirely successful, I think, but I do not regret reading it.
TALES OF SECTOR GENERAL (3-in-1 of THE GALACTIC GOURMET, FINAL DIAGNOSIS and MIND CHANGER) by James White (Alternate)
I missed these.
THE WAYS OF MAGIC (2-in-1 of NAMELESS MAGERY and OF SWORDS AND SPELLS) by Delia Marshall Turner (Alternate)
And this. Although the Del Rey edition of the first had awful
awful ad copy, right out of How to Kill Sales with Cliched EPF References
101, I have heard good things about it.
HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE by J. K. Rowling (Alternate)
This would be the US version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's
Stone, translated into American by someone at Scholastic who apparently didn't think highly of their customers.
I do actually buy some material from Scholastic (because books are not completely fungible and they have e.g. Nix working for them) but really.
Worth reading if only to how to inclue the readers without forty pages of "As you know Bob, the hyperdrive was invented by a lone engineer back in the Dark Age of Liberalism and Big Government."
DRAGONS: THE MODERN INFESTATION by Pamela Wharton Blanpied (Alternate)
No idea.
PREACHER: UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon (Flyer)
A graphic novel about a man entangled in the affairs of heaven. I think this is the one where you get to meet Jesse's charming family.
I used to hate Dillon's art but it's grown on me.
SPRING
TRAITOR'S SUN by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Missed this.
VITTORIO, THE VAMPIRE by Anne Rice
And this.
STAR WARS: YOUNG JEDI KNIGHTS: UNDER BLACK SUN (3-in-1 of RETURN TO ORD MANTELL, TROUBLE ON CLOUD CITY and CRISIS AT CRYSTAL REEF) by Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta (Alternate)
Ha ha. Pay to read Kevin justanotherhack Anderson? Life is too short.
THE ENGINES OF DAWN by Paul Cook (Alternate)
I tried to read this. All I remember is the little bit I did read was horrible.
[Yes, this is the Amazing Stories Paul Cook]
SEIZE THE NIGHT by Dean Koontz (Alternate)
Missed this.
CAVERN OF BLACK ICE by J.V. Jones (Alternate)
And this.
A DOG'S LIFE (2-in-1 of TOP DOG & DOG EAT DOG) by Jerry Jay Carroll (Alternate)
And this.
THE CELTIC QUEST IN ART AND LITERATURE by Jane Lahr (Alternate)
And this.
