Freaking out about the Moral Majority was the thing to do at the time. What was the name of that 80s Isaac Asimov short in which an academic does in one of his rivals by time-traveling and changing history so that the Moral Majority run everything, act like 17th-century New England Puritans for some unknown reason, and convict the guy of witchcraft?

To be fair, the sudden rise of the politicized religious right as a force capable of swinging national elections in the United States was genuinely alarming, most people not in the subculture didn't see it coming, and it had baleful effects continuing to the present.
