SAN FRANCISCO -- Facebookhas made it official: Its users will no longer get a vote in how the giant social network handles their personal information.

And the votes that they did cast over the past week rejecting Facebook's proposed changes to privacy policies will not count. Facebook said Tuesday it has already adopted the policy changes.

As one of the ignorant Faceless Ones, I am somewhat surprised to learn that Facebook previously allowed users to vote on this kind of stuff. Everything I thought I knew about F led me to believe that they made arbitrary and capricious decisions on how personal information is handled without consulting anybody.

Oh, yes, that's the usual way. Apparently it's more fun if they just do it, not only without forewarning but without telling anyone afterward either.

And some people wonder why I don't put true information into my Facebook profile.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do. You can check out anytime you like but your data can never leave.

I keep thinking that I missed getting, much less acting on, most of the notices FB sent out. And like you, I wasn't entirely sure that, regardless of what policies they said they had, they weren't just going ahead with their own thing anyway.

Now we know they rigged the rules to ensure that they can.
