Once again I will have to trek an entire block to vote in the Federal election!

Voting every half-block!

Because inconvenience will destroy the republic!

Yeah, Canada is (was?) a Dominion. I think it's the only one, and that's not a recognized geopolitical entity anyway.

According to something-or-other I read, it's a republic rather than a straight democracy--but I don't know if that was a reputable source.

Now, if you lived in a civilized country, like the one south of you, you'd vote by mail...

OTOH, if I lived in a civilized country, like the one to my north, I wouldn't need to worry about paying medical bills if I ever lost my job...

If I embrace parkour, I can shave a good third off the distance.

The mind reels at the concept of a "Nicoll School" of parkour. The potential for property damage alone...

-- Steve is similarly oppressed by Elections Canada, having to travel a whole 4 bus stops to reach his polling station.

It should include the shortest route to the emergency room!

Off topic, James, can you recommend some non-doomy fiction? Mysteries are okay, as well as SF&F.

The Flavia de Luce mysteries are non-doomy. Ditto the Ladies Number One Detective Agency books (the TV show was actually filmed in Botswana, although I think they couldn't find many local actors to be in it).

Non-doomy SF includes but is not restricted to:

The Next Continent
Rocket Girls
Rocket Girls: the Last Planet
The Lord of the Sands of Time
Loups-Garous (ADULTS ARE USELESS warning)
Maybe Tales of Ibis, depending.

Nothing bad ever happens in a Milk Morinaga manga as far as I know, excepting the fact that nobody in any of her stories is capable of a simple declarative sentence under any circumstances requiring clear and unambiguous communication; I can only assume that if one of her protagonists was on fire, that character would delicately hint about it to her friends for 28 issues, occasionally lapsing into timid silence over her concern about the social repercussions of admitting one is on fire.

Also, some of Morinaga's work turns out not to be work-safe.

In Oregon, we can vote by mail :)

I can do that too and I can vote at the local Elections Canada office or at the advance polls. The advance polls for me are about 2.5 km away and the local Elections Canada office is about 5 km away....

Ok, how long did it take (from 'get out you bums' to actual voting day)?

It seemed really fast compared to the US version where it's this ling 2+ year process costing billions of dollars.

Depends on which party you are talking about. The Conservatives have been running election ads for a couple of years. It also seemed like they owned the media/press for most of the last several years though that seems to have changed during the last week or so.

No one else had money to spend on campaigning. The Conservatives want to end federal subsidies for federal parties as they have lots of money and too bad for everyone else.

Used to be able to do that. This time, the polling station got moved a kilometre or two, though.
