@2 - You might also want to take a look at kisekae. There's a lot of kisekae out there and a surprising amount of it is perfectly safe for small humans (but check it first anyway. You never know.)

I find the Regency dolls much more interesting, with the variety of facial features and skin types. With only a few minutes of fiddling, I've been able to make a perky and stylish young lady whose complexion will probably cause her great difficulties in Society. In other words, perfect for a story.
