Sequestration leaves US vulnerable

Although really, at this point in time we probably would find it hard to deal with a DOOM ROCK from SPACE of a size to "unleash global catastrophic devastation" if it was on a path that would hit us any time soon so all this is really doing is sparing us the knowledge we are doomed.
The mean interval between successive impacts by DOOM ROCKS from SPACE of a size to "unleash global catastrophic devastation" - 5 km across, say - is approximately twenty million years.
I am about 60% sure this isn't an Onion-style piece.
