A Writer at Work

What it says on the tin; this follows a writer during a working day. Writing isn't really a spectator sport.

The Legend of Annie Christmas

A giant black woman, Annie travels across the US, eschewing traditional gender roles, having somewhat Paul Bunyunesque adventures and crushing evil whenever she finds it (beginning with the guy who tried to enslave her as soon as she stepped off her boat). Success at adventuring is not matched with success at love, not because she cannot win men but because they have a terrible habit of dying young.

When the Mountain Fell

Faced with what seems to be the total extermination of all life in a valley after a neighboring mountain collapses, the villagers in this story bend their every effort towards not doing anything useful to look for survivors and to convince themselves that the one survivor is an undead when he finally emerges from the rubble. Not meant as a comedy.

Aside from the survivor's wife, this is town full of terrible, terrible people....

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

A biography of the White House, with notes on some of its occupants. The narrative took fewer liberties than I would have expected from a story of this vintage.

Just as Tapestry used to sit on Ophelia if Ophelia was being annoying, so too will Ophelia sit on Fig if he lazily swipes at her tail as she walks by. The look of disbelief on his face as she sat on him was pretty amusing.

As mass murdery as the new Superman is, I don't think he is dark enough. I think it would have been edgier if it turned out Kryptonian visitors inspired Aztec myths thanks to their need to eat the hearts of photogenic children to power their abilities; Kal could feel very badly about having to zoom back to the Metropololis Orphanarium to get another power-up; it wouldn't just be pointless gore but characterization.

I don't see things working out well for young Jimmy Olsen in this version.

Nameless is indeed pretty much deaf. I walked behind her as she was
drinking from a water dish and stood there for about five minutes. No
reaction until she turned around and got an "Oh crap" expression on her face.

Colloquy # 4 - The Joe Miller Joke Book

This looks at humour and in particular the Joe Miller Joke Book. The shade of the unfortunate dramatist whose name got hung on this collection of wheezers and lame jokes is called up to explain the history of the book, which he blames on a hostile critic.

(more factual than I expected)
