Is there a list anywhere of books that were given a big push by their publishers, only to sell at midlist (or worse) levels? It would be handy for all the "Harry Potter's success is purely due to hype" arguments online.

The stereotypical job list for kids in artistocratic families is that the first son is the heir, the second son joins the military and the third son joins the church. I'm not that clear on what happened to sons four and up.

In a fantasy world, should that go heir, soldier, mage? Yes, a lot of third sons won't be particularly adept at the trade but I expect a lot of third sons made lousy clergy.
