I have to say while I am not surprised to see shwi headed towards extinction at a rapid pace (After all, I know _I'm_ not posting much and I used to be a frequent poster) I am a little surprised to see how robust rasfw seems to be.

I understand why SF (in the narrow sense), such as it is, is increasing dominated by Commonwealthers [1] but why the heck is the Prometheus Award increasingly dominated by non-Americans? I mean, four of the awards since 1996 have gone to a (former, if you think people get over that kind of thing [2]) Trot. Is American native-born Libertoonie SF a doomed subgenre?

1: The short version is Americans have no future. The long version is that they _think_ they have no future. I don't blame any one faction: for every Lefty tree-hugger insisting that the US adopt a strict policy of self-flagellation and poverty, there's a Neo-Con insisting that the US is about to go under a great brown tide of Themness.

2: If you don't, then Jerry Pournelle is a suspected Communist. Just saying. I'd keep an eye on him for symptoms like a fondess for May Day Parades.

Someone else's round-up of the various Best-Of collections.

Actually, my hobby interests (as they relate to short stories) are kind of narrow: what I would really like to see is a round up of the science fiction best ofs, and I arbitrarily exclude fantasy and horror from that for the purposes of satisfying my curiousity about something.

Hrm. It wasn't on my to-do today list but now I have a question that can only be answered by reading the Dozois collection. How long is it, anyway?

Huh. No page count given as such (Each story gets its own self-contained count).

I am the only person on my block to have cleared a path to the street. As it happens, the little snowplow that does the sidewalk needed access from the street. In return for giving him access through the snow banks, he did my drive down to the car parked in it.
