For one thing, New Mexico is now Democratic. Screws up the whole chart, I think.

Now, you might ask "Does this mean Republican party leaders, by
relying on the states they do, demonstrate that they are Communists at
heart?" Of course they are. SALT I: Republican. SALT II: Republican.
Ending the grain embargo on the SU: Republican. Who opened relations with
Red China? Nixon, a *Republican*. Who folded on the South Vietnamese?
Nixon and Ford, both, you guessed it, Republicans. Notice how when the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics (and there's that R word again) collapsed,
the Republicans immediately bungled the next election. Loss of necessary
guidence from their Red overlords? Almost certainly.

Chart clicks through to Flickr comments, which suggest other measures of party affiation -- governor, state legislature control, Congressional representation (House or Senate, or both). More measures might be of interest, or some continuous combined measure of party-ness.
