That's messed up. And deeply ironic.

I find it deeply disturbing that the Onion can no longer keep up.

Irony is dead, or at least mortally wounded

Things like this make me think there's some kind of nanovirus going around that messes with people's DNA, destroying their ability to realize that what they are doing is in any way ironic.

Oddly enough, the infection appears to be much more deeply entrenched among political conservatives... or maybe that's just a sampling error due to their political dominance of the US for the past 15 or so years.

Also, in that 700 club article, they seem to not be able to decide if the stock market crash is due to the meddling of Satan or the punishment of God for legalizing gay marriage (odd that Canada is in pretty good shape so far, in that case).

Careful, guys -- if it's both Satan's work and God's punishment, then God is responsible for evil in the world as well as good, which sort of calls into question the essential goodness of God. Which is heresy (although I don't know what the name for this particular heresy is).

Isaiah 45:7 would disagree. "I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil. I am GOD, that doeth all these things."

So the Christians finally decided to chant and molest a giant metal bull over this whole mess?

It's about time, I was getting scared.

I saw this elsewhere, but though it was a spoof or Onion Article that had somehow hit major sites ...

This is real?

... Words fail me, really, I think everyone else has summed up anything I could say.

Still, when I'm honestly thinking that real news was something that came out of the Onion, something is badly wrong.

A friend of mine (who is going to divinity school at Vanderbilt in Tennessee) said about this:
The photo is truly awesome. Those people's serious prayer request is interesting though. Do they really want an economy based on biblical principles? It would be a bit confusing if we tried to use the OT for that, but if we stuck with the NT we'd wind up with some kind of pretty intense socialism. I wonder if that's really what they want?

The first thing I thought when I saw the photo was the cult of Mithras, which was the major competitor to early Christianity in the Roman Empire. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithras ).

Certainly these people are showing little actual familiarity with the core teachings of the Bible.

Top story, front page, today's WashPost: The Republican Club at Liberty University. And at the very end, we hear from a :::gasp::: liberal Christian and find out there's a new Democratic Club there.
