I played most of a campaign of D&D, but was never allowed to read the rulebooks.

I own the Player's Handbook for AD&D 2e, and played many campaigns in the Forgotten Realms setting with some house rules (permanent Wild Magic for wizards, armor has HP, a few custom classes). Had a chance to read a rulebook with extra spells (Tome of Magic?).

Picked up the free PDF of Coyote and Crow when it was offered and read the whole thing, but haven't played it.
