I once had a D&D character who was granted a deity-level Wish, and chose "at-will invisibility, like a ring of invisibility, but can choose exactly what part(s) of my body are invisible or remain visible". The DM ruled that this was acceptable, but that if I wanted that kind of flexibility, I'd have to spend time practicing. So my guy earned some petty cash as a "model" for trainee healers.

Over later adventures, it was sometimes useful to appear to be a skeleton, and on one occasion I just left my brain and part of my nervous system showing. A levitating brain and nerves were close enough to the appearance of one or another of the classic monsters to fool our adversaries.
