If someone was trying to entice their new girlfriend to read SFF, what horrifyingly dated works whose flaws you don't notice because you grew up with them would you recommend?
Well, it is a broadly held opinion among SF writers of an older generation that most of the population are gullible idiots, religious freaks, and various other sorts of wastes of protoplasm and Morons on the March. A democratic society is always at risk of being voted out of existence (or at least economically devastated by the election of bread and circuses, AKA social welfare, candidates) when the people aren't swayed by the Competent Men and science fiction writers. I recall one story (by Kornbluth, I think) where the electoral choice was Science Dictatorship or Regressive Theocracy (I think it was resolved by convincing the Science Dictatorship candidate that less tyranny might be a good thing, but I'm not sure IRC.)
