I read this a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. Possibly similar to Watership Down in terms of suitability for children. If Watership Down is the epic-poem version of the life of animals, this is maybe a more realist-thriller version. Iliad vs. The Big Sleep.

"The Nut Job" - grimdark version?

Now I want to read a Squirrel Girl adventure called The Nut Job, a spoof of any and all gangster stories... Presumably it would have a fast paced story, wacky action sequences, and every nut joke they could get past the censors.
