The first volume won a Hugo. Recently. Personally, I liked the early bits but was derailed by "Alpha Centauri does not work that way."

Also the very early SF notion that all life-bearing planets are Earthlike, so that's why aliens will want them. Especially since those aliens live on a place with more extremes than even Doc Smith ever dreamed of - if they could survive there, there's got to be another one of our planets that will do.
