What about people who are passionate about their detachment?

Date: 2012-01-27 05:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] doc-lemming.livejournal.com
Or detached about their passion?

And what about apathy: is that really the same as detachment, or is it on another axis? (What was the saying, the opposite of love isn't hate, it's apathy?)

I had a student last semester who got really enthusiastic about being existentially detached. Oh, to be nineteen and self-contradictory again.

Detachment is easier. And safer.

Passion is better.

Detachment is messy. And you always end up with spare parts when you re-attach.

Actually, detachment is not better than passion, despite my vote. Detachment with some passion is, however, far rarer than passion alone. And passion alone is rather dangerous for all around.

Despite having voted for passion, I heartily second this. "And" is always better than "either/or".

Complaint: Need ticky boxes, so I can mark both "Detachment" and "I have no particular feelings about this poll".

But I'm not really that worked up about my complaint.

They should team up and fight crime! Or possibly star in a hilarious odd-couple type sitcom.

Passion! Passion, passion, passion, passion, PASSION!

Moderation is for monks.

(Actually, I'd be tempted to add, 'Why yes, I do have to sweep up a lot of broken glass left in my wake, metaphorically speaking. Why do you ask?' except that, upon reflection, I realize with a certain amount of disappointment that I'm rather more circumspect in real life than my avowed philosophy might suggest.)

Roughly what I was going to say. "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." Therefore, my take on it is that "better" consists of matching passion or detachment with the appropriate circumstances.

So this poll is about

There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.

vs.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.

I would like to complain about this poll. Surely the first two entries should have been "Passion!!1!" and "Detachment...", respectively?
