a bitty Dell (just over 2 pounds)

Really? What model, just out of curiosity?

D400. Maybe I have the exact weight wrong on it? Pounds/kilos, I do not keep them straight well. But it is small, yet not so small that I can't pump the font size up and still read quickly. And has no bells and whistles on it. But it does have wireless and runs like a charm and fits in my shoulder bag. It's heavier than I'd like but it keeps me from dragging around anything more. It holds a lot of comic books, I tell you what. <.<;;;

Before I got this laptop I was looking at Tablet PC's as possible Big Giant E-Book Readers with full computer functionality. The prices and weights both seemed too high for what I wanted, but maybe I stopped looking too soon.

I continue to think that a clipboard sized device is going to be a good compromise between big enough to see the screen comfortably vs small enough to carry.

(searches Dell D400) Nice. But it's incredibly awkward and dropping-prone to have a notebook computer open and running while you're, for example, standing in line someplace or walking from point A (where you were reading a minute ago) to point B (where you want to pick up reading again without shutting off, folding, and re-starting a machine.). Hence my tablet pc interest.

I strongly suspect that this is where that particular market segment will settle: micro tablet computers that are approximately the size of a trade-paper back book in HxW and about 0.5" thick. There are rumours flying around that Apple's designing a solid-state laptop-like device that uses the same touch-recognition code in the iPhone and iPod Touch, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if that's what will come out the back end of that research. Such a device would probably have WiFi and Bluetooth radios in it, but not cellular, and would be your portable document reader/web browser/video watching device that you can tote about your house and take to the coffee shop (where you can use their hot spot).

If you need/want to use a keyboard/mouse with it, you can use your Bluetooth input devices while the tablet is propped up on a small stand to act as a "display", or you can use the Touch onscreen 'keyboard' that's part of the iPhone/iPod Touch interface.

I'm hoping that they do really produce such a thing, because it's what I would probably purchase if it were available. Of course, being Apple, it may not be exactly inexpensive...

Have you seen the ASUS EEE PC? It's running Linux or Windows, solid-state hard-drive, 2 pounds, 7" screen, wireless connectivity. No touch screen. [livejournal.com profile] autopope & [livejournal.com profile] kinzel have recently (within the last week) gotten them, and their initial comments are very positive.

I saw one of these last week, just casually bandied about, but hadn't seen the specs until now. *NOW* I'm having serious want.

If I had an unlimited toy budget, I'd be buying one. As it is, the Nokia N810 is first on my list, the NAEB club buy of the Bookeen Cybook Gen 3 is second, and the ASUS is - at best - third.

We'll probably look at the ASUS the next time my wife suffers a laptop death - if the keyboard is good enough for her for everyday use, we could very easily end up getting one for her.

Where has Charlie commented? I've been watching his non-LJ blog -- is it on his LJ?

Thanks! I don't think I can afford to read Charlie's LJ all the time. I'm already running long on who I have.

Hey, I've had this account for almost two years and this is the first time I've been signed off!

No access. It must be friends-only. Oh well. Maybe he'll talk about it elsewhere.

Thanks! But I went to the source and he decided to friend me so I could read it myself.
