but remain a bit baffled by suggestions that the solution is to change my computer's OS. To me, it feels a bit like buying a new car because the tires on the old one were defective [1]. Most of what I have one this laptop does what I want when I want it to, after all.

I also have the (probably ignorant) impression Linux is a fine system for people who either know what they are doing with computers or who keep someone who does chained up in the basement, neither of which really describes me.

1: OK, I am talking about Win98 so perhaps that should read "buying a new car because the frame on the old was half-rusted when it rolled out of the factory and the gas tank explodes every time you use a word with the letter "e" in it."
