Was Blair a Crypto-Papist while PM?
Canada's first Roman Catholic Prime Minister was our fourth PM, Sir John Thompson, back in the late 1800s. While his conversion to Catholicism was seen as a liability (and was why Abbott got the nod to succeed MacDonald), it doesn't seem to have made him a worse PM than his predecessors. Since Thompson, we've had bagloads of Catholic PMs, none of whom have been particularly obsequious towards Rome.
Only two Canadian PMs have died in office (None in the 20th or 21st centuries). Thompson was the second of them. Also, only three have died abroad and Thompson is one of them; he expired of a sudden heart attack while visiting Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle.
