What kind of birds? A sparrow pecking your shoes is much less of a problem than a magpie.

We have a female cardinal that comes to our feeder who is absolutely livid at the female cardinal that appears in the window. She has graduated from hopping along the windowsill and pecking at the window to sitting on the pole holding the feeders and making short flights to attack the cardinal mocking her by doing the exact same thing.
