Imagine a balkanized US

The current US has a pretty straight-forward name for itself, if not one quite as simple as the one Canada uses for itself (Canada, no modifiers). In the case where the US broke up into several section, do you think the names for the new nations would acquire themed descriptives or will they stick to state names or perhaps regional ones?
If they did use descriptives, what would they use?
Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are all Commonwealths now but that doesn't seem to be the same sort of flag seeing "People's Democratic Republic" use to be.
