The Lifeboat Award

The Lifeboat Foundation will present the “Lifeboat to the Stars” award along with $1,000 to the winner at the 2013 Campbell Conference.

The “Lifeboat to the Stars” award will be for the best work of science fiction of any length published in 2011 or 2012 contributing to an understanding of the benefits, means, and difficulties of interstellar travel.

Because of when I grew up and whose works I was exposed to, I would not myself have used "lifeboat" in this context.

Another Tony Daniel story, this time one from a subgenre I saw a lot of with the older shows: it's the modern take on the Mad Men stories, except instead of being amoral ad men caught up in some sort of sfnal event, it's coked-up ad people hawking internet products. Except the drug they are hooked on isn't cocaine but rather the ashes of their dead boss.

Not my thing but I can see how it would be for some people.
