After all, I might run into someone new who knows the answer.

Does anyone know what became of Stephen Robinette? He had a career in SF that lasted long enough to produce two novels and a collection and I believe he had a small number of mysteries as well. I don't believe I have seen anything by him in decades.

Posted on behalf of William Baird. Note that the odd formating around "an"
and "offical" seems to be my fault but I can't get it to come out right and
I cannot see what I am doing wrong.

This is something of a guest post, a truly rare and honored act by
James. Some of you probably recognize me from the occasional taunting
and snarkiness that I visit upon James here. This time I am not
writing to harass James about He3 or some such. I am writing to ask
the uberlarge group of readers of James' LJ for some help.

I am leading up a team of individuals that are entering into the Northrop
Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge
. Yes, we are an
official team
and even have a blog, if an infant one. This is a demonstration
step for an even bigger challenge that we will do next: we're planning on
tackling the Google Lunar X Prize. Our sponsors want to see if we can
tackle something smaller first.

We have been on track, if a little delayed, to do just that. However,
on Monday, the FAA added a whole new set of requirements for tethered
flights and it forces a compression of our testing schedule as we work
to get the paperwork (and it is almost purely paperwork) done.
Because there will be time lost from coding and small scale testing,
we are being forced to test more frequently on our testing grounds in
the SF Bay Area. This means more dinero. Dinero we just don't have.

I will be pounding pavement with our big backers, so to speak, but
that again takes away time from working on our rocket, The Wind at
Dawn
. it also takes these companies a looooong time to make
decisions with respect to shelling out money. It's understandable.
It's also not time we have anymore.

Therefore, I am asking for help from the wider net of, well, The Net
and the friendly Denizens there-in.

I have a paypal drive up and running in the hopes that there are
enough interested people that we can raise enough money for three
tests. That's a really nontrivial amount of money, but I can hope.
If 10% of James' readers would be willing to donate $10, we would
probably go a long way towards getting that goal. I would be
delighted if people gave more, btw.

Those that give will be acknowledged on the team blog. Those that put
up a post spreading the word for the paypal drive will get a link
(assuming that your site is not scary) from the blog. Those that
donate substantially more than the $10 will get their name on one of
the fuel tanks.

To donate, please, go to the team website and click on the
donate button.

Any and all help is deeply appreciated.

Thank you for the time spent reading this.
