For some reason, it never occurred to me to find out what Hermann Oberth did after the 1920s. In fact, until I read his entry, I'd never heard of National Democratic Party of Germany

Walter Hohmann was less fortunate, expiring of stress after the Allied bombing of Essen.

For some reason, Hohmann dying at 65 while Oberth made it to 95 seems the wrong way wrong, particularly since Hohmann, like Ley (who also died young), was a German rocket expert who didn't cuddle up to the Nazis whereas not only was Oberth a willing collaborator in the Nazi war machine, I don't believe it is all that clear how de-Nazified Oberth was after the war.

Usual wikipedia disclaimers apply

I can't recall the last time that I saw someone refering favourably to Schumacher's Small is Beautiful. I certainly had no idea his followers were still around, although I don't know why I would expect them to have gone away.

Why do I persist in googling authors before I've read their books?

Matthew Jarpe: [...] "In Guns, Germs and Steel, Jared Diamond describes how Europe eclipsed China on the world stage because Europe was made up of a lot of little countries and China was one big country. Competition between states drove innovation, both technological and political."

[added later]

This seems to have turned into a discussion of Diamond (which is fine) but my orginal concern was that I will be reading the result of Jarpe's understanding of Diamond some time next week. My concern is that having read Jarpe's comments will bias my perception of his book. This could have been avoided by not researching him first.

1: Jared Diamond is dead to me.

Who wouldn't want a new Hugh Laurie novel?

According to Amazon, Hugh Laurie's The Paper Soldier is due out this month:

* ISBN-10: 0718143906
* ISBN-13: 978-0718143909

Unfortunately, the reality seems to be that the book does not yet exist. Lack of existence is widely seen as a serious impediment to sales, nothwithstanding the example of Poyais.

The following works by Daniel Keys Moran are now available as pdfs (hssssss) or rtfs:

A Moment In Time (script)

All Possible Worlds Pilot (script)

Old Man (story)

On Sequoia Time (story)

The Armageddon Blues (book)

Emerald Eyes (book) (Also includes The Star, a short story)

The Long Run (book)

Speaking of SF books with dubious premises, part of the background in the Continuing Time series is that 21st century Earth was so hopelessly overpopulated that only an oppressive world government could salvage anything from the situation and even given the UN's great resources, food was so scarce that wasting it was socially taboo.
