The decline of US tourism
Jul. 26th, 2007 02:01 pmBut while the travel business is flourishing internationally, tourism to America has been on a steep decline, dropping 36 percent between 1992 and 2005, with a loss of $43 billion in 2005 alone. The nation’s international tourism balance of trade declined more than 70 percent over the past 10 years - from $26.3 billion in 1996 to $7.4 billion in 2005.
Now, it's intuitively obvious that tourism to the US would have declined since 2001 but the period covered includes the Clinton years. I thought that tourism to the US increased in the 1990s? In fact, I am pretty sure that it increased by about 10% just from 1999 to 2000 and then began its inevitable and irreversable slide once monkeyboy was selected President.
What the US needs is an answer to the Soviet-era Intourist, where a helpful DHS agent is assigned to each visitor. Hmmm. And to anyone who willingly comes into contact with Non-Americans.
