Mar. 10th, 2005 12:57 pmThis $20,000.00 award is given for "in celebration of the writing life" of Engel's body of work.
In 2001, Engel suffered a stroke that deprived him of his ability to read but not of his ability to write (although he does use some aditional tools, human and machine). He has relearned how to read at a grade three level. His next book is The Memory Book, in which his long running character Bennie Cooperman deals with a debilitating brain injury. The Memory Book will have an afterword by Oliver Sachs.
