I grew up on the Ultima and Bard's Tale series of computer RPGs (and AD&D 2e), so the idea that all characters in a battle are in melee range of each other was a surprise when I first starting seeing JRPGs. It's worse when they insist on animations showing the character running across the battlefield, swinging at their opponent, then running back to their companions. Every. Single. Round. (I even once saw a game where an archer ran over, shot someone in the face, then ran back.)
