I started to post a comment, wound up quoting a bit from the essay, comment got longer... moved to a post because it got long and I wasn't directly addressing your point.

esr's gonna esr.

I am burned out on esr ever since the legendary Scottish Panel at the last San Jose worldcon. (I got to share a mike with his halitosis when he started ranting at China Mieville about pyramids of skulls.)

I choose to imagine this event as akin to The Scottish Play, a panel so cursed that its true name must never be spoken.

I got about halfway through the extended wankfest about Heinlein and Campbell in the first section, before deciding there were some pokemon outside that desperately needed to be caught.

I did not finish the essay. But the best description for the part I read is "pack of lies".

A brief google search shows him to be a climate change denire also. No surprise there.

Back in Usenet days, he liked to repost G. Harry Stine's old Analog essay about how the Dean Drive was on to something and that Newtonian mechanics needed to be modified with a third-derivative term.

I do not actually know what the Dean Drive is, so when mentions of it come up, I like to pretend it was invented by Pamela Dean and go from there.

Or by James Dean, for improved motorcycle performance.

I expect it would be better written, even if not more plausible, if Pamela Dean had been involved.
