In defense of my old teachers

Now that I think about it, most of the teachers I had were pretty good. In particular, I don't recall any duds in the science courses and only one in English.

Gym teachers were mostly useless for me [1]. I think they had no real interest in any student as manifestly lousy at sports as I was. Actually, I think they hated me for taking up valuable time. If they had ever mastered the stone point or fire I could have been in real trouble. As it was, the only time I ever got a teacher angry enough to scream at me, it was a gym/health teacher who took offense to my pointing out that getting formally married made very sense from a tax point of view.

1: Except for the one who fired a fast ball at my head to see if I was paying attention (No).

The gym teachers at my high school were obsessed with volleyball and basketball. I'm 4' 11" on a goood day.

I sucked at gym.

I was actually ok at baseball. I couldn't field because of that whole only one eye thing and I couldn't run because of the deformed knees thing but for some reason I was a solid hitter. If we had people on base, I could always hit them home. Of course, baseball was dropped from gym after grade 8.

I was good at tennis and surprisingly good at rugby (short and brick-like has its uses -- I make people's jaws drop by telling them I was a teenage hooker [0]). But those weren't official parts of the gym curriculum, just stuff we were allowed to do in our "free time". And I played rugby for inter-class sports competitions.

[0] Hooker is a position in the game of rugby -- front row of the scrum, among other things.

Goodness, not nearly as much as I hated them for taking up my valuable time. I mean, a class where I was graded on whether or not I changed my clothes?
