J. Robert (Bob) Verdun

Despite the initial name name format of his listed name, he isn't a libertarian. (http://www.bobverdun.com/index.html)

I assume when in his bio he says "Withdrew from Civil Engineering to pursue an opportunity as editor of the national-award-winning campus newspaper, which was a full-time position in 1969," he is referring to the Chevron. Well after Verdun's day, the Chevron was taken over by a cabal of Marxist-Leninists, stripped of its official standing at UW and eventually dwindled into nonexistance.

If I recall correctly, the paid positions continued at the CHEVRON's replacement, the IMPRINT, until another coup was staged, this time by a poet whose name I forget. The vulnerability of the campus paper to take-overs by small groups still hasn't been fixed as far as I know.

Bob Verdun is also a well-known local homophobe, who ran the newspaper in Elmira for some time, and who used to make harrassing and obscene phone calls to me when I was activisting around Bill 167, back during the NDP government, when they tried to pass an omnibus bill for same-sex rights.

As it happens

the -only- reason I went out to vote was to vote for whoever was running against him.

Do you actually have that button? Where did it come from? I can't read the small print.

[identity profile] poeticalpanther.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe I still do, actually, yes. It was from the Hamilton teachers' union (that's Hamilton, Ontario, if you're unfamiliar), and I was given it at Pride 2005. The small print has the name of the union.

And I made a second version, when I came out this year as bisexual rather than the plain ol' dyke I used to think I was. :)

Hmmm, so probably not available now. Maybe I'll have Nancy make one. Thanks!

Meant with all due supportiveness

You know, I am totally baffled by the demographics of my circle of friends, online and off. This is in no way an objection or a criticism. It's just that if I were looking for someone with the particular set of connections I have, "straight recluse (nerd*)" wouldn't be where I would start.

With the store, it made perfect sense, because my only litmus test was "got money?" and my impression was that this was not universal amongst gamestores in KW.

* Nerd's the general one, right?

Livejournal has a way of encouraging that kind of randomness. And despite the falling sales of sf books, I think sf does, too; it certainly seems to me that various fandoms are growing together in some uber-glompy manner, and that there are more people from more and more backgrounds and of more variegated type being drawn to it. And, well, you're a bit of a magnet for those interested in the thinking-person's sf, I'd say.

As expected, Hazel is still Queen of Mississauga (oops, I mean mayor *g*). Our local Councillor got re-elected with a health margin, too. Our school board trustee incumbent decided to run for city council in a newly created ward, and got elected. So we have a new trustee. None of the candidates for trustee made much of an impression, so we'll have to see how the person who actually got in does. So, other than Carolyn Parrish getting elected to city council (pity), no surprises here.

[identity profile] james-nicoll.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There weren't any real surprises in Kitchener but over in Waterloo, grognard Herb Epp was defeated by neophyte Brenda Halloran.

[identity profile] james-nicoll.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Halloran seems to be some manner of Green.

[identity profile] james-nicoll.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't the Canadian Constitution specify that Hazel is mayor of Mississauga as long as the grass is green and the sky is sort of a grey, brownish color?

LOL! Something like that. Mind you, she is still VERY with it and still able to manage a busier work week than many half her age.

[identity profile] james-nicoll.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably the closest she's ever come to not being mayor was 1979, when the train derailment could have asphxiated a good chunk of Mississauga. It wouldn't have been her fault but I suspect "half the town died on her watch," is hard to come back from.

As it turned out, she got a lot of credit for being very involved in the evacuation decision and ensuring it went smoothly, and monitoring the situation constantly despite an injured ankle.

My understanding is that Hazel will be President-for-Life of Mississaugastan thanks to the temple she had built to the Elder Gods... and then called City Hall.

-- Steve'll swear that thing has non-Euclidian geometry in addition to its oil-rig/calendrum/clock-tower cross-breeding.

It is an ugly building, isn't it! To give her a bit of credit, though, it was built on time, on budget and without having to borrow money for it.

[identity profile] knotty-pine.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Very nearly proof enough that sacrifices to elder gods were used in its construction.

It's also a splendid example, I've been told, of "neo-brutalism". 'nuff said.

[identity profile] james-nicoll.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always wondered what it would look like if neo-brutalism was filtered through an architect with severe and untreated ADD and now I know. There's, what, about five different approaches to design in that exterior?

Yeah, yeah, I know. People from Kitchener shouldn't sneer at other people's city halls because we have this one:

Ia, ia, McCallion ftaghn!

-- Steve's never actually been inside it, though... who knows, maybe it's wonderful on the inside?

[identity profile] hot-soup.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually like the building. However, inside they have some surprisingly ornate halls and there's a stairway that's wider at the bottom than it is at the top. At least Mississauga has a centre of gravity now, even if it was chosen on the basis of its proximity to the Giant Mall.

[identity profile] james-nicoll.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder what would have happened if when the various bits of TO were forcibly unified in the 1990s the Tories had included Mississauga as part of the city. Would Hazel be Mayor for Life over TO?

I bet she knows what the World Health Organization is.

Can someone remind me which Southern Ontario town kept re-electing a virulent anti-semite?
