Democracy in retreat!

WaPo writer deluded enough to think the US is a global force for liberal values.

Of course, skiffy authors and their widespread inability or unwillingness to imagine democratic futures are part of this, by promoting the idea there are no alternatives to autocracy.

(I've just watched the whole of Borgen and they had no trouble finding drama in democratic government, so it's not that)

I'm glad I saw Borgen a couple of years ago. If I'd been watching it now, it would have provided yet another reminder of how the US is currently experiencing some of the more unfortunate possibilities for democratic government. People thinking about issues! and discussing them without resorting to fearmongering! attempts at problem solving! plus ambition and real lives. (Though it was disconcerting to see Archie back in Europe and not in New Zealand like we'd been told.)

You could have truncated that link title after the first three words and it would be generically true.

WRT the illustration, I had no idea that Vladimir Ilyich had been an Arrow Collar Man.

Where does the WaPo writer claim that?

Even in the United States, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is embracing illiberalism. He is stoking fear of Muslims; threatening retaliation against the media; and promising to embrace strongmen like Vladimir Putin and bring back and enhance the use of torture against suspected terrorists.

Does not look like an endorsement of "global force for liberal values".

Last paragraph. "No other nation can match the power of the United States in advancing liberal values."
